Что такое формат файла SID?
Files with the .sid extension store large raster images with embedded geographical coordinates. MrSID (sometimes pronounced "Mister Sid") is an acronym for Multiresolution Seamless Image Database. The format was developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in the mid-1990s and commercialized by LizardTech around 1998; the brand is now maintained under Extensis (formerly Celartem).
MrSID Generation 4 (MG4) is the current version of the standard, succeeding MG2 and MG3. It supports very large images through a wavelet-based compression algorithm that operates in both lossy and numerically lossless modes - typical compression ratios on aerial imagery run from 15:1 to 50:1. The format stores all resolution tiers in a single .sid file, so any individual overview level can be extracted without decoding the entire file, a crucial advantage when working with datasets measured in terabytes. Each .sid file begins with the ASCII magic tag msid at byte offset 0. Georeferencing metadata may be accompanied by a sidecar .sdw world file.
MrSID was designed for a range of demanding storage applications:
- Geographical information systems (GIS) for storing large aerial or satellite images
- FBI and other US federal agencies as a means of storing fingerprints
- Photo archiving and digital retrieval workflows
- American Memory at the Library of Congress for large cartographic and image files
MrSID is a proprietary format. Decoding is freely available through the LizardTech MrSID Decode SDK (DSDK), which is also integrated into GDAL-backed tools including QGIS and ArcGIS. Creating new .sid files requires the paid Extensis GeoExpress encoder. Common open alternatives are JPEG 2000 (.jp2) and ECW; for broader compatibility, GeoTIFF (.tif) is widely used.
Безопасность и защита
РИСК: LOWMrSID is passive raster imagery with no scripting, so the file itself is low-risk. The practical cautions are licensing and provenance: decoding is free but the codec is proprietary, so some open-source GDAL builds omit the MrSID driver; and aerial/satellite imagery can be sensitive or licence-restricted data - respect the provider's terms. Avoid sketchy 'SID viewer' download sites that bundle adware or the dead LizardTech browser plug-in; use QGIS, GDAL, ArcGIS Earth or IrfanView from their official pages.
Детали формата
в двух словах- Commodore 64 SID music (PSID/RSID) - Chiptune file containing 6581/8580 SID-chip music data, played by emulators like sidplay; unrelated to the image.
- Windows Security Identifier (SID) - Not a file format at all - a unique ID string Windows assigns to users/groups; the .sid name collision causes confusion.
- Steam game cache / misc .sid data - A few applications write unrelated .sid data/index files; not the MrSID image.

Технические подробности
глубокая спецификация| Magic bytes | `msid` (hex `6D 73 69 64`) at byte offset 0, optionally followed by a generation/version field |
| MIME type | `image/x-mrsid`; also seen as `image/x.mrsid` or `application/octet-stream` |
| Encoding | Binary, little-endian field layout; image payload encoded as discrete wavelet transform (DWT) sub-bands |
| Compression | Discrete wavelet transform (DWT); lossy or numerically lossless modes; typical 15:1-50:1 ratios on aerial and satellite imagery |
| Format generations | MG2 (Generation 2), MG3 (Generation 3), MG4 (Generation 4) - MG4 adds multispectral band support and improved lossless compression |
| Color depth | 8-bit grayscale and 24-bit RGB in MG2/MG3; MG4 supports multispectral imagery with higher bit depths per channel |
| Image size limit | No fixed pixel ceiling; designed for gigapixel orthophotos and satellite mosaics; single datasets can exceed several hundred GB |
| Internal structure | `msid` header tag and version field, multi-resolution wavelet-coded sub-bands, embedded overview pyramids, and georeferencing metadata - all in one file |
| Multiresolution access | All zoom levels stored in a single `.sid` file; any resolution tier can be decoded independently without reading or decompressing the full dataset |
| Georeferencing | Coordinate metadata embedded in the file; optionally supplemented by an external `.sdw` sidecar world file or `.aux` auxiliary file |
| Decode vs. encode licensing | Decoding is free via the LizardTech MrSID DSDK and GDAL integration; encoding new `.sid` files requires a paid Extensis GeoExpress license |
| Typical file size | Tens of MB to many GB per file; large orthophoto or satellite mosaics may reach several hundred GB as a single `.sid` |
| Associated sidecar files | `.sdw` (ESRI world file for georeferencing), `.aux` (ESRI auxiliary file for additional metadata) |
| Platform support | Windows, macOS, and Linux - via the GDAL MrSID plugin (using the Decode SDK) or native LizardTech/Extensis SDKs |
| Container type | Single-file proprietary container combining all pyramid levels, wavelet-coded image bands, and metadata - no separate manifest required |
| Выпущен | Mid-1990s (Los Alamos National Laboratory; commercialized by LizardTech ~1998) |
| Последняя версия | MrSID Generation 4 (MG4), adding improved compression and multispectral support |
