Files with the .tcw extension store two-dimensional or three-dimensional vector graphics in a proprietary binary format specific to TurboCAD software. The extension stands for TurboCAD for Windows - .tcw is the native drawing format for the Windows environment. To share a project with collaborators using a different platform or application, it is necessary to save it in the DXF or DWG format.
Files with the .tcw extension can store projects of a very diverse nature. They are used similarly to AutoCAD projects by architects, engineers, and designers. These can be:
- two-dimensional layouts - 2D layout,
- single three-dimensional models - 3D model,
- complete three-dimensional scenes - 3D scene.
The TurboCAD software developed by IMSI/Design is available in several tiers - Designer, Deluxe, and Pro Platinum - depending on the application and users' needs. It supports 2D drafting and 3D solid/surface modeling, photorealistic rendering, and 3D printing output, and also includes a rich library of ready-to-use elements that facilitate work.
.tcw is a proprietary binary container with no published magic-byte signature or public specification. The format version advances with each major TurboCAD release, so files saved in recent versions may not open correctly in significantly older installations. There are no reliable third-party programs available for viewing or converting .tcw files; however, IMSI/Design offers a free trial of TurboCAD, making it possible to open and export the file to a more universal format such as DWG or DXF. Older DOS-era TurboCAD drawings used the .tcd extension rather than .tcw.

As with any CAD format, only open files from trusted sources, and be wary of third-party 'TCW viewer' or 'TCW to DWG converter' downloads on ad-heavy portals - they are often bundled with PUP/adware and rarely actually read the proprietary format. Get TurboCAD only from turbocad.com / IMSI Design. For untrusted files, exporting via the sender to DWG/DXF/PDF avoids needing to run unknown software.
