Files with .rvt extension store parametric 3D construction models created with Autodesk Revit, a BIM software. .rvt project files can comprise:
- Floor plans
- Building designs
- Walls, sections and elevations
- Cross-sections and 3D views
.rvt files can be used to generate 3D views of models, as well as edit projects interactively by adding objects and modifying parameters. Information about a model's components is saved as part of each component's own data.
.rvt files also store metadata and other information about projects. .rvt files can be created using premade elements (BIM objects), either created by users or shipped with Revit. They can be opened with Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Viewer (web) and compatible viewers such as Navisworks. Project views may be exported to 2D/3D .dwg files, or to .ifc for exchange with other BIM applications.
Revit was originally developed by Revit Technology Corporation, released in 2000, and acquired by Autodesk in 2002. Revit allows various specialists - architects, structural engineers and MEP engineers - to collaborate on a joint project. Revit runs on Windows only.
Internally, .rvt uses a Microsoft OLE2 Compound File Binary (Structured Storage) container - the same D0 CF 11 E0 header found in legacy .doc and .xls files. Revit-specific model database streams, geometry, parameter data and an embedded preview thumbnail are stored inside. A BasicFileInfo stream (UTF-16) records the exact Revit build version. Each yearly Revit release bumps the format version; files saved in a newer version cannot be opened by an older one.

РИСК: LOWAn RVT is a passive data file and does not execute code, so the file itself is low risk. The practical dangers are workflow, not malware: (1) opening an RVT in Revit upgrades it to that version permanently and it can no longer be opened by older Revit - always keep a backup before opening someone else's file; (2) very large central models can be slow or fail to open on underpowered hardware. Download Revit only from Autodesk; "free Revit download" sites often bundle malware or cracked installers.
