Windows Journal Note

БЫСТРЫЙ ОТВЕТ

A JNT file is a Windows Journal note - a handwritten, digital-ink notebook page created by Microsoft's Windows Journal app on Tablet PCs running Windows XP through 8.1. Microsoft removed Windows Journal in 2016 because of serious security flaws in its file parser, so Windows 10 and 11 cannot open JNT files by default. The safest path for old notes is to convert them to PDF on a machine that still has the app installed.

Что такое формат файла JNT?

A .jnt file, also known as a Windows Journal file, is a note document created by the Windows Journal software application. The .jnt file contains digitally handwritten notes, drawings, and graphics captured using a stylus on a Tablet PC; typed text and embedded images were also supported.

Internally, .jnt uses a proprietary binary format identified by the NB (NoteBook) signature bytes at the start of every file. Companion layout templates carry the .jtp extension.

Windows Journal shipped from Windows XP Tablet PC Edition (2002) through Windows 8.1. In 2016 Microsoft removed the application from Windows 10 via update KB3161102 following the discovery of critical security vulnerabilities in the .jnt parser. On modern Windows the files cannot be opened natively; Microsoft OneNote is the recommended replacement. Existing notes can be exported to PDF or TIFF on a legacy Windows system before migrating.

РИСК: HIGH

Windows Journal .jnt files were a real exploitation vector: Microsoft removed the Journal application from Windows in 2016 (update KB3161102) precisely because around a dozen vulnerabilities - including remote code execution - could be triggered by a specially crafted .jnt fed to Journal's parser. Do not open .jnt files from untrusted or unexpected sources, and do not install the old Windows Journal app or Journal Viewer just to open one, since they carry those unpatched flaws. To read your own old notes safely, convert them to PDF on a controlled/offline machine and work from the PDF thereafter. Use OneNote for new note-taking.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

What is a .jnt file?
It's a Windows Journal note - a handwritten/ink notebook page made by Microsoft's Windows Journal app on Tablet PCs (Windows XP through 8.1). It's binary digital ink, not plain text.
Why can't I open my .jnt file on Windows 10 or 11?
Microsoft removed the Windows Journal application in 2016 (update KB3161102) because of security flaws in how it reads .jnt files, so modern Windows can't open them by default. The recommended path is to convert old notes to PDF.
How do I convert a .jnt file to PDF?
On a machine that still has Windows Journal, open the note and use File > Print to the Journal Note Writer or 'Microsoft Print to PDF'. That gives you a portable PDF of the handwritten page.
Is it safe to open a .jnt file?
Be careful. The .jnt format was an active malware vector - Journal was pulled from Windows over remote-code-execution bugs in its parser. Don't open .jnt files from untrusted sources, and don't reinstall the vulnerable Journal app just to view one.
What replaced Windows Journal?
Microsoft recommends OneNote. It doesn't open .jnt files directly, so convert old notes to PDF first and bring those into OneNote if needed.
Can I edit the handwriting in a .jnt as text?
Not faithfully - it's digital ink, not editable text. Handwriting recognition can extract some text, but layout and strokes are lost; convert to PDF to keep the note as it looks.
