Files with the .dfx extension belong to the category of CAD files. The extension is ambiguous, however - it is very often a misspelling or variant of the far more common .dxf (Drawing Exchange Format), and the two are frequently confused.

Files with the .dfx extension are drawings created using software called Drafix QuickCAD or Drafix Professional CAD, developed by Foresight Resources during the DOS and early Windows era. These applications are used for 2D technical design. In .dfx files, 2D vector entities such as lines, arcs, polylines, text, and layer definitions can be stored, as well as completed projects of installations, floor plans, and other flat technical objects.

.dfx files are used to store 2D technical drawings created in CAD applications. This allows for the transfer of these drawings between different machines as well as applications. Therefore, .dfx files enable many users to work on a common project together.

The popular program AutoCAD provides convenient conversion of files with the .dfx extension created in Drafix QuickCAD or Drafix Professional CAD to its dedicated .dwg format, making it possible to open .dfx files in newer versions of AutoCAD. Because the extension so often represents a mistyped .dxf, a useful first step when receiving a .dfx file is to rename it with a .dxf extension and attempt to open it in any DXF-capable tool.

Depending on origin, a .dfx file may be plain ASCII text (beginning with the group-code sequence 0 followed by SECTION) or binary data. Free cross-platform tools such as LibreCAD and QCAD can open files of this type when they contain valid DXF content.
