Files with the .cs extension are associated with the C# programming language and the Visual Studio development environment.
.cs files store application source code written in C#. C# can be used to create applications from the most basic ones that display a message on the screen to more complex programs that can access a database, retrieve web resources, or communicate with external devices. .cs files are compiled - by the Roslyn (csc) compiler, typically via the .NET SDK or Visual Studio - into intermediate language (IL) packaged in a .DLL or .exe assembly. C# was introduced in 2000, released with the .NET Framework 1.0 in 2002, and is now a cross-platform language targeting Windows, macOS, and Linux through the modern .NET runtime. The language is standardized as ECMA-334 / ISO/IEC 23270 and reached C# 13 with .NET 9 in November 2024.
.cs files store data in plain text format and can therefore be easily edited using any text editor. However, it is recommended that .cs files be edited using dedicated code editors that support C# syntax and can flag potential errors. Such tools can automatically correct syntax errors, autofill values, and highlight issues such as:
- spelling errors,
- syntax and lexical errors,
- data type errors.
Working with .cs files using dedicated editors - such as Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code (with the C# Dev Kit extension), or JetBrains Rider - is much easier and faster, and thus more effective. Related project files include .csproj (MSBuild project configuration) and .sln (solution file grouping multiple projects).

РИСК: MEDIUMA .cs file is plain text and harmless to read or open in an editor - it cannot run by itself. The risk appears only when you COMPILE and RUN the code: C# source can do anything a program can (delete files, make network calls, run shell commands), so building and executing untrusted .cs files - or a whole untrusted project/solution - can execute arbitrary code. Read unfamiliar source before you build it, and don't run code you don't trust.
