File LIST

Generic List File (plain-text list)

RISPOSTA RAPIDA

A .list file is almost always plain text with one item per line - paths, names, package repositories, URLs, or similar entries produced by some program. Open it in any text editor (Notepad++ on Windows, TextEdit on Mac, nano on Linux). The most common case on Linux is APT's /etc/apt/sources.list, which lists software repositories.

Che cos'è il formato di file LIST?

A .list file is a generic plain-text list - one entry per line - whose exact meaning depends entirely on the program that created it. There is no single standard, no magic number, and no versioned specification: the .list extension is a naming convention adopted independently by many tools across Linux, Unix, Windows, and macOS.

The most widespread concrete use is the Debian and Ubuntu APT package manager, which reads repository sources from /etc/apt/sources.list and from individual .list files dropped into /etc/apt/sources.list.d/. Each active line in an APT .list file specifies a repository using a deb or deb-src keyword, a URL, a distribution codename, and one or more component names such as main or universe.

Beyond APT, the .list extension appears in a range of contexts:

  • Build systems and compilers storing file-path or manifest lists
  • Mailing and recipient lists used by email or distribution software
  • GNU Info directory index files linking to manual pages
  • Custom application exports - paths, URLs, identifiers, or key-value pairs

Because the content is plain text (usually UTF-8 or ASCII), any text editor can open and inspect it. Lines starting with # are treated as comments and ignored by most owning programs. A .list file overlaps in purpose with a .LST file, a .CSV file, a .CONF file, or an ordinary .TXT file - the extension alone is not enough to identify the content, so look at which program created it.

Sicurezza e incolumità

RISCHIO: LOW

Reading a .list is safe - it's plain text with no executable code. The only real caution is when a .list is a live system file: editing APT's /etc/apt/sources.list with a bad or untrusted repository line can break package updates or, worse, point your system at a malicious software source - so back it up first and only add repositories you trust. Use a plain-text/code editor (never a word processor, which can corrupt it), and on Windows keep Unix (LF) line endings for Linux .list files.

Windows3 apps
Windows Notepad Integrato Right-click > Open with > Notepad for a quick read. Modern Notepad handles Unix (LF) line endings; fine for small lists.
Notepad Open-source Right-click > Edit with Notepad++ to read/edit the list with line numbers. For a Linux .list (e.g. APT sources), set Edit > EOL Conversion > Unix (LF).
Visual Studio Code Gratuito Open the .list to read/edit larger lists with search and highlighting; mind the LF/CRLF indicator for cross-platform files.
macOS2 apps
TextEdit Integrato Open the .list; choose Format > Make Plain Text so it stays plain text (never save as RTF).
Visual Studio Code Gratuito Open the .list to read/edit larger lists with search and highlighting; mind the LF/CRLF indicator for cross-platform files.
Linux3 apps
Vim Open-source 'sudo vim file.list' - powerful terminal editor for viewing/editing lists and config files.
nano Open-source Edit in the terminal, e.g. 'sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list'. Back up first (cp file file.bak) before changing a live system list.
GNOME Text Editor / gedit Open-source Open the .list in a GUI editor to read or edit (use sudo for system files like APT sources).

Typical file sizeBytes to a few megabytes, scaling with the number of entries
Line endingsLF on Linux/Unix; CRLF on Windows; most parsers accept both
APT repository syntaxDebian/Ubuntu APT uses deb <url> <distro> <components> lines in /etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*.list

Domande frequenti

What is a .list file?
Almost always a plain-text file with one item per line - a 'list' of paths, names, package repositories or similar. There's no single .list format; the meaning depends on the program that made it (e.g. Debian/Ubuntu's APT uses sources.list).
How do I open a .list file?
Open it in any text editor - Notepad or Notepad++ on Windows, TextEdit (plain-text mode) on Mac, nano/vim/gedit on Linux. It's plain text. Avoid word processors like Word, which can corrupt it.
What is /etc/apt/sources.list?
It's the APT package manager's .list file on Debian/Ubuntu: each line names a software repository APT installs from. Edit it (or files in sources.list.d/) carefully with a text editor, back it up first, and only add repositories you trust.
Which program created my .list file?
Open it as text and look at the lines, and note where it came from. Common owners are APT (package sources), build/packaging tools (file manifests), GNU info, and older mail apps. The contents usually reveal the source.
Can I open a .list in Excel?
Yes, if the list is tabular - import it into Excel or LibreOffice Calc and pick the right delimiter, or save it as .csv first. For a simple one-item-per-line list, a text editor is easier.
Is .list the same as .txt?
Essentially yes in form - both are plain text. .list just signals the file is a list of entries for a particular program. Renaming .list to .txt changes nothing about the contents, but the owning program may expect the original name.
