How to convert PFB to OTF

- Convert it to .OTF in a few seconds.
- Download your new .OTF file.
What to expect
- Glyph outlines transfer directly - both use PostScript/CFF cubic Beziers - so the shapes are preserved without redrawing.
- OpenType layout features and rich metadata are not invented; the OTF carries only what the Type 1 source provided.
- Kerning and side-bearing data depend on the companion metrics file being present; without it, spacing information can be lost.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting PFB to OTF keep the letter shapes accurate?
Yes. Both formats store cubic Bezier (PostScript/CFF) outlines, so the glyph shapes transfer directly with no shape conversion, and the visual design is preserved faithfully.
Why convert a PFB to OTF?
PFB is a legacy PostScript Type 1 format that modern systems are phasing out, while OTF is a current, widely supported font. Converting brings an old typeface into a single self-contained file that installs cleanly on today's operating systems.
Where does the OTF font work?
An OTF installs on Windows, macOS and Linux and is usable by virtually all current applications. For websites you would take a further step and convert OTF to WOFF2, which is optimised for the web.
What might not carry over from the PFB?
Type 1 fonts hold limited metadata and hinting compared with OpenType, so advanced typographic features are not created out of nothing. Kerning and metrics stored in a companion .pfm/.afm file are only included if that data is available during conversion.
