.tfw files store georeferencing data for TIFF rasters in a GIS (Geographic Information System) context. Each .tfw file is a plain-text sidecar that sits alongside a .tif or .tiff image of the same base name, supplying the spatial anchoring that the image itself lacks.
.tfw files store information in plain text: exactly six numeric lines, one decimal number per line. These six values encode an affine transform that maps image pixels to real-world map coordinates:
- x pixel size (ground distance covered per pixel column)
- row rotation (typically
0.0for north-up imagery) - column rotation (typically
0.0for north-up imagery) - y pixel size (a negative value: ground distance per pixel row)
- x coordinate of the centre of the upper-left pixel
- y coordinate of the centre of the upper-left pixel
.tfw files are structurally identical in concept to other world files such as .jgw (JPEG) and .pgw (PNG) - the naming convention uses the image extension's first and last letters plus w. .tfw files are commonly used for storing precise satellite imagery, aerial photography, and scanned map data alongside their raster source.
The world-file convention was introduced by Esri in the early 1990s with ArcView. A .tfw carries no pixel data and no coordinate reference system name; only the six affine coefficients. The coordinate system is typically specified in a companion .prj file. Modern GIS workflows often embed georeferencing directly inside GeoTIFF tags instead, but .tfw sidecars remain widely supported for compatibility with non-GeoTIFF rasters and legacy pipelines.

РИСК: LOWA TFW is a tiny plain-text file with six numbers - it cannot contain or execute code and carries no privacy data beyond the map coordinates of the associated image. The only real 'risk' is operational: deleting or mismatching the .tfw leaves the TIFF un-georeferenced (it opens as a plain picture but won't line up on the map), and editing the numbers carelessly shifts the image off-position. Keep the .tfw with its same-named image.
