In most cases opening a .src file in a text editor reveals recognizable source code - C-style syntax, a scripting language, assembly directives similar to .ASM files, or markup. Some tools use it as a preprocessed include or template that expands into a different output format during a build step, similar in role to .H header files. A smaller number of applications write .src files in a binary or semi-binary format as an internal resource file, though plain text remains by far the most common case.
Because the extension is shared across so many unrelated contexts, there is no universal magic number or fixed byte signature. To identify what a specific .src file actually contains, open it in any text editor: the file's first few lines - a shebang, a comment header, or recognizable syntax - usually make the language and intended toolchain obvious.
