.slx files are associated with Simulink, a simulation software. Simulink is a graphical programming environment that uses blocks and diagramming tools as its basic elements, which users combine to create complex dynamic models and run simulations.
.slx is the successor to the legacy .mdl format, introduced in MATLAB/Simulink R2012a. Unlike the plain-text .mdl, an .slx file is packaged as a ZIP archive following Open Packaging Conventions (OPC). Inside, the primary model data lives in simulink/blockdiagram.xml using UTF-8-encoded XML, and compression is applied per entry using DEFLATE - making .slx files considerably more compact. The XML structure also gives .slx proper support for non-ASCII characters and makes it more amenable to version control systems.
Simulink is a package for MATLAB, developed by The MathWorks. MATLAB is very popular among scientists, and most technical and engineering degree programs require students to learn it. The environment allows users to model complex systems or perform mathematical calculations.

РИСК: MEDIUMAn SLX is a data/model file, not an executable, so simply opening one is low-risk. The caveat is that Simulink models can contain callbacks and embedded MATLAB code (model/block callbacks, InitFcn, S-functions) that run when the model is opened or simulated - so a model from an untrusted source could execute arbitrary MATLAB. Open unfamiliar models with caution, review callbacks, and be wary of S-functions that call out to compiled binaries. Fake 'SLX viewer' download sites can bundle adware - there is no legitimate free standalone SLX viewer; use MATLAB/Simulink or unzip the file to inspect its XML.
