Что такое формат файла RAM?
A .ram file is a plain-text metafile - a small pointer document developed by RealNetworks in 1995 alongside RealAudio. It contains no audio data at all; instead, it holds one or more network stream URLs (one per line) that tell a media player which RealMedia stream to fetch and play. Typical URLs use the rtsp://, http://, or the legacy pnm:// protocol.
When a browser or operating system opens a .ram file, it hands those URLs to RealPlayer (or a compatible player such as VLC), which then connects to the streaming server and begins playback. This "launcher" pattern was common in the late 1990s and early 2000s, allowing websites to embed streaming audio without transferring the actual media file to the user's machine.
Because .ram is plain text, you can view and edit it in any text editor - Notepad, Vim, or similar. Lines beginning with # are treated as comments. A typical file is under 1 KB.
The format has been largely superseded by SMIL playlists (.rpm/.smil) and modern protocols such as HLS and DASH. The streaming servers that once served the referenced URLs are almost universally offline, making most .ram files non-functional today. Do not confuse .ram with .ra - the actual RealAudio audio file that carries encoded audio samples.
Безопасность и защита
РИСК: LOWA .ram is harmless plain text, but the URLs inside connect to external servers - in principle a malicious .ram could point your player at an untrusted host. Inspect the URL in a text editor before opening it in a player. Most .ram links are simply dead. The legacy RealPlayer installers have historically bundled extra software, so prefer VLC over installing RealPlayer just to open one of these.
