.pef files are generated by Pentax digital cameras (now marketed under the Ricoh Imaging brand).
What do .pef files store?
A typical .pef file contains a raw sensor image - either uncompressed or losslessly compressed depending on the camera model. It is built on a TIFF-based container and includes the full-bit-depth data captured by the camera's sensor, an embedded JPEG preview, and EXIF metadata with Pentax-specific MakerNote entries.
How Pentax cameras save photos
.pef files store raw sensor data without any additional adjustments applied by the camera software. Images are saved in an unprocessed format exactly as captured by the sensor, preserving 12-bit or 14-bit per-channel color depth for maximum post-processing flexibility. Ricoh Imaging cameras can also save photos in the open .DNG format, which offers broader software compatibility while keeping the same raw advantage.
Why can't I open a .pef file?
Some applications have problems opening certain .pef files because the standard is not unified. Various Pentax cameras save images using slightly different per-model variants of the format, and newer bodies may require updated decoder profiles. The best solution is to use tools compatible with your specific Pentax camera model - keeping raw developers such as darktable or RawTherapee up to date ensures the widest support.

РИСК: LOWPEF is a passive image data file - it contains sensor data and metadata, not executable code, so opening one is safe. The practical cautions are non-malware: PEF is large and proprietary, so keep originals backed up and consider archiving to open DNG for longevity; and remember EXIF/maker-note metadata (camera, sometimes GPS, timestamps) travels with the file - strip it before publishing if privacy matters. Editing is non-destructive in raw developers, so the original PEF is kept.
