An .mxd file is an ArcGIS Map Document - the native project file for ArcMap, the desktop GIS application included in Esri's ArcGIS Desktop suite. It stores everything that defines how a map is assembled: data frames, layer draw order, symbology, labeling rules, layout elements (scale bars, north arrows, legends), and print-page settings.
Crucially, an .mxd does not embed the actual GIS data. It holds references (file paths or connection strings) to external datasets such as shapefiles, geodatabases, rasters, and map services. If those sources are moved, renamed, or become unavailable, the affected layers display broken-link indicators (red exclamation marks) until the paths are repaired.
Internally the format is an OLE2 Compound File Binary (CFBF) container - the same wrapper used by legacy Microsoft Office documents - identified by the D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 magic-byte signature. The map-document content is proprietary and undocumented. File versions are tied to ArcMap releases (8.x through 10.8); a newer .mxd cannot be opened in an older version, though ArcMap can save a down-compatible copy.
.mxd was introduced with ArcGIS 8.0 in 2000, replacing the older ArcView .apr project format. ArcMap reached end of support on 1 March 2026; its successor, ArcGIS Pro, uses the .aprx format instead and can import .mxd files into a new project.

РИСК: LOWAn .mxd is a passive map document - it isn't an executable and contains no macros, so opening one won't run code. The practical caveats are non-security: it's a proprietary Esri binary that only ArcGIS reads, it depends on external data sources (which can be broken/missing), and it can leak information indirectly - the referenced data PATHS and connection details (including network or database server names) are stored in the file, so sharing an .mxd may reveal internal folder structures or data-source locations. Only open .mxd files from sources you trust, as with any project file.
