Что такое формат файла MSE?
A .mse file is an encrypted MAXScript - a scripting program for Autodesk 3ds Max that has been locked using the built-in encryptScript() MAXScript command. Script developers create .mse files from plain .ms source files when they want to distribute tools, plug-ins, or utilities to other 3ds Max users without revealing the underlying code.
3ds Max loads and executes a .mse file in-memory by decrypting it on the fly, but the application does not expose the original source and provides no built-in way to reverse the process. The encryption is Autodesk's proprietary obfuscation - it protects intellectual property through obscurity rather than through strong cryptographic security.
To run a .mse script:
- Open 3ds Max, go to MAXScript → Run Script, and select the file.
- Alternatively, place it in the
scripts\startupfolder so 3ds Max runs it automatically on launch.
.mse files are binary, carry no publicly documented file signature (magic bytes), and work on Windows only - the same platform restriction that applies to 3ds Max itself. Compatibility is tied to the version of MAXScript that encrypted the file; a script encrypted with a much older release may fail in a significantly newer 3ds Max. Related formats include .mcr (macro category resources) and .mzp (zipped MAXScript packages).
Безопасность и защита
РИСК: MEDIUMBecause a .mse is RUN as code inside 3ds Max and its source is hidden, you cannot inspect what it does before running it. Only run .mse tools from authors you trust - a malicious or buggy script can alter or delete scene data and access the file system through MAXScript. Encryption here protects the author's IP, not you; treat an unknown .mse like any unverified executable.

в двух словах- Magic Set Editor set/file - Magic Set Editor (free card-design tool) uses .mse-set files; some installs/searches associate .mse with Magic Set Editor card sets.
- Melodyne / misc app data - A few unrelated applications have historically used .mse for their own settings or data; check the originating program.

Технические подробности
глубокая спецификация| Encoding | Binary (Autodesk proprietary encrypted MAXScript bytecode) |
| Source format | Produced from a plain `.ms` MAXScript source file via the `encryptScript()` command |
| Creator command | `encryptScript()` - a built-in MAXScript function that writes the encrypted `.mse` output |
| Encryption type | Proprietary Autodesk obfuscation; not based on a published cipher such as AES or RSA |
| File signature (magic bytes) | None publicly documented; no fixed header to identify the format |
| MIME type | `application/octet-stream` |
| Typical file size | A few KB to tens of KB (single script or tool) |
| Container structure | Single encrypted binary blob; not a multi-file archive |
| Compression | None - the file is encrypted only, without a separate compression layer |
| In-memory execution | 3ds Max decrypts the file in-memory at runtime; the decrypted source is never written back to disk |
| Source recovery | Autodesk provides no official decryption path; third-party tools exist but are unreliable and version-specific |
| Version compatibility | Compatibility tied to the 3ds Max version used to encrypt; `.mse` files from much older versions may fail in current releases |
| Execution paths | Run via MAXScript → Run Script in 3ds Max, or place in the `scripts\startup` folder for automatic execution on launch |
| Operating system | Windows only (3ds Max has no macOS or Linux release) |
| Associated application | Autodesk 3ds Max (the sole official executor; no third-party application can run `.mse` files) |
| Выпущен | MAXScript encryption available in 3D Studio MAX / 3ds Max (encryptScript, late 1990s onward) |
| Последняя версия | Tracks the 3ds Max / MAXScript version that produced it (current 3ds Max 2026) |
