.idw files are associated with Autodesk Inventor software. They store 2D engineering drawing data - sheet layouts, projected views, section cuts, detail views and annotations - that reference external 3D models rather than containing 3D geometry directly. Autodesk Inventor is parametric modeling software for designing, simulating and visualizing mechanical parts and larger assemblies.
Autodesk Inventor saves project data across several complementary file formats:
.idw- 2D engineering drawings (this format).ipt- individual part models.iam- assembly projects combining multiple parts.ipn- presentation files for exploded views and animation
.idw files are typically converted to .dwg format, compatible with Autodesk AutoCAD and widely accepted by manufacturers and suppliers. Autodesk now recommends saving Inventor drawings directly as .dwg; the .idw format remains fully supported but .dwg is the interoperable default in current releases.
Tools - including Inventor's own iLogic scripting and third-party utilities - allow batch processing of .idw files to update title blocks, revise part references or export entire drawing sets automatically.

IDW files are Microsoft Compound File Binary (OLE2 structured-storage) containers, so they share the D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 signature with old Office files and other Inventor types (.ipt/.iam/.ipn). Internal streams identify it as an Inventor drawing; the format is proprietary and version-specific.

How do I open an IDW file without Inventor?
Upload it to the free Autodesk Viewer (viewer.autodesk.com) in a browser to view, measure and print it - no Inventor needed, works on any OS including Mac. The legacy free Inventor View / Read-Only viewer also opens IDW on Windows.
Why won't my IDW file open in Inventor?
Usually a version mismatch - the drawing was saved in a newer Inventor than yours, and older Inventor can't open newer files. Use the same/newer Inventor, ask the author to save down or export PDF/DWG, or view it in the web Autodesk Viewer.
Why are the views in my IDW blank?
An IDW only references the 3D model; it doesn't embed it. If the associated .ipt/.iam files are missing or moved, the drawing views can't resolve. Get the model files from the sender and keep them together.
How do I convert an IDW to PDF?
Open it in Inventor and use Export > PDF (or print to a PDF printer) to output all sheets at scale. You can also upload the IDW to the free Autodesk Viewer and print to PDF from there.
What's the difference between IDW and IPT/IAM?
An .ipt is a single 3D part and an .iam is a 3D assembly; an .idw is the 2D drawing that documents them with dimensioned views and a title block. The drawing references the model, not the other way around.
Should I use IDW or DWG for Inventor drawings?
Both work in Inventor. IDW is the older native format; DWG is Autodesk's preferred, more interoperable drawing format that opens in AutoCAD too. For sharing outside Inventor, DWG or PDF is usually better.
