.daa files are associated with the PowerISO software application, developed by PowerISO Computing, Inc. Files with the .daa extension contain disk images created using PowerISO. The tool offers built-in functions to compress, encrypt, and password-protect the data. It can also split a single .daa image into smaller parts - a feature especially useful when working with large disc images. Multi-part archives use extensions such as .d00 and .d01 alongside the main .daa file.

A disk image is an exact copy of the original data stored on a mass storage device. A disk image is not the same thing as a backup copy - disk images contain all the contents and structure of the source data volume. .daa files can thus preserve disk partitions or Master Boot Record sectors normally hidden from the user. .daa images can be mounted on the system just like normal disks and opened in PowerISO as virtual drives.

Internally, .daa is a proprietary container wrapping a standard .ISO image: the source disc is divided into 64 KB chunks, each individually compressed with zlib (DEFLATE) or LZMA and, optionally, encrypted. The file begins with an ASCII DAA magic signature at byte offset 0. Because the format is proprietary and undocumented, PowerISO is the primary tool for reliable decoding; the command-line utility daa2iso can convert .daa files back to standard .iso on Windows and Linux.

.daa disk images can be used for data archiving - for example, storing movies, audio CDs, computer games, or software installation files - and the images can then be stored in the cloud and accessed on various remote devices.

.daa files can also be used as a secure data storage solution. The supported image encryption and password protection are effective means of restricting unauthorized access to sensitive data. The compression algorithm used by the .daa format allows users to decompress only selected parts of the whole archive rather than expanding the full image at once.
