A .!ut file contains partially downloaded file data managed by the uTorrent BitTorrent client. The .!ut suffix is appended to the original filename during an active or paused download - for example, movie.mkv becomes movie.mkv.!ut while the transfer is in progress. Appending the .!ut extension is an optional feature that can be activated in uTorrent settings. After the download is complete and hash-verified, uTorrent automatically removes the .!ut suffix from the filename, leaving the finished file in place.

A .!ut file may store an incomplete file for which the download process was paused, stopped, or has not yet finished. Because the underlying payload mirrors the target format, .!ut files can hold partially received:

• Graphics,
• Video,
• Audio,
• File archives (such as ZIP archives),
• Text and subtitles.

Even if a file is not downloaded completely, it may be possible to open it by removing the .!ut suffix and then opening it with an appropriate program, depending on the file type and format - streaming formats like .mp4 or .mkv often play partially through a media player. The download of an incomplete file can be resumed at any time using the original .torrent descriptor.

However, if resuming fails, the torrent entry must be deleted and re-added to uTorrent, with the user selecting the folder where the partially downloaded file is saved. Sometimes, due to program errors, .!ut files are not deleted from the download folder even after completion and must be removed manually or the file re-downloaded.
