JPG is useful for embedding a diagram in a document, email or presentation when the recipient has no Visio or LibreOffice. It is also handy for uploading a diagram preview to a web page or wiki. All diagram structure, shapes, connectors and metadata are lost in the process - only a flat raster image remains.

LibreOffice Draw FREE
Open the .vsd via File > Open, then go to File > Export As > Export As Image, choose JPEG and set the DPI before saving. Also available for macOS and Linux.
Microsoft Visio APP
Open the .vsd, go to File > Save As (or Export in newer versions) and select JPEG File Interchange Format (.jpg). Visio lets you set output pixel dimensions and can export each page as a separate JPG.

- JPG is lossy; compression artifacts appear around lines, arrows and text edges - PNG is almost always a better choice for diagrams because it is lossless.
- LibreOffice Draw reads VSD via the libvisio library; complex stencils or custom shapes may look slightly different from the original Visio rendering.
- For multi-page VSD files, only the currently active page is exported in LibreOffice; switch pages in the Pages panel before exporting.
