SRF is a proprietary raw format used only by the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-F828, so almost no consumer software can open it directly. Converting to .JPG makes photos viewable everywhere - phones, browsers, and printing services - without specialist software. JPEG files are also much smaller: a DSC-F828 SRF typically runs 5-13 MB while an equivalent JPEG is 2-4 MB.

  • JPEG is lossy - keep your original .srf files as masters since they hold 14-bit uncompressed sensor data that cannot be recovered from the JPEG.
  • White balance, exposure, and tone curve are baked in permanently at export; adjust them in the raw editor before converting for the best result.
  • EXIF metadata (camera model, timestamp, GPS if recorded) carries over to the output .jpg - strip it with ExifTool before publishing if privacy matters.
