On macOS, Safari stores active downloads as .download bundle packages and renames them to the real filename only when the transfer finishes. A .download that holds a video contains .mp4 data from the first byte; the .download suffix is only Safari's staging label while writing to disk.

Open the Downloads list in Safari (the arrow icon in the toolbar), click the circular-arrow resume button next to the interrupted item, and wait for the transfer to complete - Safari renames the file automatically.
VLC FREE
Right-click the .download bundle, choose Show Package Contents, and drag the data file inside into VLC to play whatever portion of the video already arrived.

- Renaming a
.downloadto.mp4only works if the file size matches the expected size - a truncated MP4 will be corrupt and most players will refuse to open it. - VLC can play the portion that arrived but cannot recover bytes that were never transferred.
- On Windows or Linux, a
.downloadfile received from a Mac has no resume mechanism - go back to the original source and re-download.
