An .lcf file is an Archicad Library Container File - a proprietary binary archive developed by GRAPHISOFT to bundle an entire Archicad library into a single distributable package. Instead of shipping hundreds or thousands of individual GSM library parts (objects, doors, windows, lamps, macros) alongside their supporting images and folder structure, GRAPHISOFT packs everything into one .lcf file. A key advantage is loading speed: an .lcf loads 2-3× faster than the same library stored as scattered individual files, because the application reads one sequential container rather than resolving thousands of separate file-system entries.
The format is not a project model file. Archicad project drawings are saved as .pln or .pla files; an .lcf holds the reusable library parts that those projects draw upon. Libraries are installed and managed through Archicad's built-in Library Manager, which can add, remove, or reload .lcf containers at any time.
The internal format version is tied to the Archicad release that created it. Newer releases may include updated .lcf libraries, and older containers may need conversion before use in a later version. The format runs on both Windows and macOS.

There is no general viewer, so beware fake 'LCF opener' download sites - get Archicad only from graphisoft.com.
