A .dtsx file is an XML-based ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) package definition used by Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS). Introduced with SQL Server 2005, .dtsx replaced binary Data Transformation Services packages from SQL Server 2000.
The file is a plain UTF-8 XML document whose root element is <DTS:Executable>, declared in the www.microsoft.com/SqlServer/Dts namespace. It encodes the full definition of an SSIS ETL workflow, including:
- Control flow tasks, containers, and precedence constraints
- Data flow pipelines (sources, transformations, destinations)
- Connection managers, variables, and event handlers
- Package configuration and protection settings
Packages are authored in Visual Studio with the SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) extension, where they live alongside a project file (.dtproj) and optional configuration files (.dtsConfig). When a project is built for the project deployment model, all packages are bundled into an .ispac archive. At runtime, packages are executed by the command-line tool DTExec.exe or by the SSIS Catalog (SSISDB) hosted on a SQL Server instance.
Sensitive connection properties such as passwords are protected by the ProtectionLevel attribute, which supports several encryption modes using a user key or a password. Packages may also carry an XML digital signature verified on load.
Because .dtsx is plain XML, any text editor can open and inspect it, though hand-editing complex packages is not recommended due to the intricate XML structure.

Review the XML before running an unknown package, and never run one you do not trust. Packages built with EncryptSensitiveWithUserKey only decrypt sensitive values on the original author's machine/account.
