ACDSee Thumbnail Database File

БЫСТРЫЙ ОТВЕТ

A DTF file is a thumbnail database ACDSee writes into a folder of images so it can show previews quickly. It is not a photo or document - just a regenerable cache. You can delete it safely; ACDSee rebuilds it on the next visit and your real pictures are not affected. The same extension is also used by the unrelated Symantec Q&A database.

Что такое формат файла DTF?

.dtf files are associated with the ACDSee image viewer, developed by ACD Systems International Inc.

.dtf files store thumbnail images in the form of a per-folder binary database. The files are loaded by ACDSee alongside the images in a folder, caching small JPEG-compressed preview images plus basic metadata so the application can display a folder's contents quickly without regenerating previews on each visit. .dtf files are not directly accessible inside ACDSee - they function purely as an internal cache.

Frequent use of ACDSee may generate large .dtf files which in turn can impact application performance by significantly slowing thumbnail loading times. Should such a situation occur, you may safely delete the .dtf file - ACDSee will simply rebuild it on the next folder visit, leaving the original photos untouched. Deleting the file should significantly improve ACDSee's performance. .dtf files are saved in each image folder alongside a companion .ddf descriptions file; ACDSee's folders are typically located in the user's Documents or AppData directory.

The per-folder .dtf cache is a legacy format from older ACDSee releases. Modern ACDSee Photo Studio replaced it with a centralized .dbin database approach, so .dtf files are mainly encountered on older Windows installations or in archived photo collections.

Безопасность и защита

РИСК: LOW

An ACDSee .dtf is a passive cache file - it contains thumbnail images and index data, no executable code, so it is safe. It is also safe to DELETE: ACDSee rebuilds it and your original photos are untouched. The only practical caution is identity confusion - make sure a .dtf you care about is the ACDSee cache and not a Symantec Q&A database (which IS a real data document you would not want to lose). Be wary, as always, of unexpected files from untrusted sources, but a normal ACDSee .dtf in your own picture folder is harmless clutter.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

What is a .dtf file?
In the ACDSee context it's a thumbnail database - a cache ACDSee writes into an image folder to show previews quickly. It holds only small thumbnails, not your real photos. (The same extension is also used by the unrelated Symantec Q&A database.)
Can I delete .dtf files?
Yes, if they're ACDSee thumbnail caches. Deleting them is harmless - ACDSee just rebuilds the cache next time you browse the folder, and your actual pictures are not affected.
How do I open a .dtf file?
You don't open an ACDSee .dtf by hand - it's an internal cache. Just browse the folder in ACDSee and it uses the cache automatically. There is no general third-party viewer for it.
Are my photos stored inside the .dtf?
No. The .dtf only stores small preview thumbnails generated from your images; the full-resolution photos remain as separate files in the same folder. Open those originals, not the cache.
My .dtf is from Symantec Q&A, not ACDSee - how do I open it?
That's a different format that shares the extension: a Symantec Q&A database, usually with a companion .idx index. The Lantica Sesame program can import Q&A .dtf files; the original Q&A (discontinued 1995) is the only other tool that read them.
Why do .dtf files keep appearing in my picture folders?
Because ACDSee creates a per-folder thumbnail cache as you browse. Newer ACDSee versions use a centralized database instead. You can delete the stray .dtf files safely if you no longer use that ACDSee version.
