Is YML-to-XML conversion lossless?
Data values (strings, numbers, booleans, lists, nested objects) all carry over. Comments, type coercion hints, and structural metadata are lost, and the element-vs-attribute mapping may not match what a specific schema expects.
Can I convert XML back to YML?
Yes - run
xq -y on the XML file or use Python's xmltodict.parse followed by yaml.dump. Note that XML attributes become @-prefixed keys in the YAML output.Why does the converted XML not match what my system expects?
Generic converters apply default element-naming rules that may differ from your target schema. You will need a schema-aware tool or a short custom script that maps YAML keys to the exact element names your system requires.
Does this work for Kubernetes or Ansible YAML files?
The conversion itself works, but those files are often multi-document (separated by
---). Split them into individual files first using yq before converting to XML.
