The only reason to produce a JPG from a .3ds is to get a 2D preview or thumbnail for documentation, a website, or sharing with someone who lacks 3D software. A .3ds file stores a binary chunk-based polygon mesh; a JPG stores pixels. The export is a rendering - a photograph of the model from one angle - not a format conversion.
