Um arquivo .blower é um arquivo normal, como um documento, foto ou vídeo, que foi criptografado pelo Blower ransomware. O Blower apareceu no início de fevereiro de 2019 e pertence à família de ransomware STOP/Djvu. Quando infecta um computador, ele embaralha os arquivos com a cifra Salsa20 e adiciona .blower a cada nome, então report.docx torna-se report.docx.blower. Como outras variantes do STOP/Djvu, ele criptografa apenas os primeiros 150 KB de cada arquivo, o que deixa o final de arquivos grandes legível, mas ainda inutilizável.
Junto com os arquivos bloqueados, o Blower solta uma nota de resgate chamada _readme.txt. A nota pede US$ 490 nas primeiras 72 horas, subindo para US$ 980, e lista os endereços de contato [email protected] e [email protected]. Durante a criptografia, o malware frequentemente exibe uma janela falsa do Windows Update e edita o arquivo hosts do Windows para bloquear sites de segurança.
