What is SRT file?

File with.SRT extension contains movie subtitles saved in text format. Each subtitles fragment contains the following elements separated by newline characters:

  • Subtitle sequential number,

  • Timestamps start and end time s using the convention GG:MM:SS,Ms --> GG:MM:SS,Ms,

  • Subtitle text to be displayed.

Below the timestamps there may also be included text display coordinates. If such information is not present, subtitles are by default displayed in the bottom- middle part of the screen. SRT files are saved in SubRip format, which allows creating subtitles for DivX and DVD movies, and is supported by most media players. The format offers simple formatting tools in the form of HTML markers, such as <u> or <i> ( tags for underscore and italics, respectively).

SRT files follow a naming convention that requires the movie title and subtitles language to be included in the filename. SRT filename convention is [movie title].language.srt, for example, Titanic.eng.srt. Most movie players support SRT files. SRT subtitles can sometimes be overlaid on a video using separated program. SRT file cane be converted into different subtitles format, edited using dedicated tools, or simply viewed with a Notepad tool.

Step 1. Download and install MPlayer
