Guitar Pro is a software application developed by Arobas Music for composing music and creating guitar tablatures, available for Windows (versions 5 and later) as well as MacOS. Guitar Pro uses GP files as its default project files. Older versions of Guitar Pro also used a file format based on XML saved to files with .GPX extension (version 6), and even older versions used files with .GTP .GP3, .GP4, and .GP5 extensions.

Contents of Guitar Pro GP files

The most early versions of Guitar Pro allowed users to edit tablatures and did not offer any advanced features. GP files introduced in version 7 can hold more complex data, including:

  • guitar, bass, drum, or piano sheet music,
  • one or multiple audio tracks,
  • metadata - information related to given file and music composition such as title, author, playback method, etc.

GP format was developed in 2017.
