Step 3. Associate BibTeX Style Document files with TeXworks

The procedure to change the default program in Windows

• Clicking the BST with right mouse button will bring a menu from which you should select the Open with option
• Select Choose another app → More apps
• Finally select Look for another app on this PC, point to the folder where TeXworks is installed, check the Always use this app to open BST files box and conform your selection by clicking OK button

The procedure to change the default program in Mac OS

• Right-click the BST file and select Information
• Proceed to the Open with section. If its closed, click the title to access available options
• Select TeXworks and click Change for all...
• A message window should appear informing that This change will be applied to all files with BST extension. By clicking Continue you confirm your selection.

Step 4. Check the BST for errors

Should the problem still occur after following steps 1-3, check if the BST file is valid. It is probable that the file is corrupted and thus cannot be accessed.

1. Check the BST file for viruses or malware

If the file is infected, the malware that resides in the BST file hinders attempts to open it. Immediately scan the file using an antivirus tool or scan the whole system to ensure the whole system is safe. If the scanner detected that the BST file is unsafe, proceed as instructed by the antivirus program to neutralize the threat.

2. Check whether the file is corrupted or damaged
