GDAL, i.e. Geospatial Data Abstraction Library, is a package of tools to read spatial data, which are written in the form of rasters and vectors. They are based on a multi-platform C++ library. This program supports more than 50 popular raster formats and more than 20 vector formats.

The main features of GDAL are a rich set of command line tools for selecting information, recalculating and deforming images; support for files larger than 4GB; support for libraries using Python, Ruby, Java or C#. This software is also used by Google Earth, GRASS GIS, ESRI and MapGuide.
